The Adventures That Led Us Here...
It all began in April of 2013 when Angela and Jesse were each cast for the lead roles in 'Jesse's Girl'; the Awaken Life Bible Study skit for the Houston’s First Baptist Church Singles’ Retreat…
Angela had no idea who this Jesse guy was until a few weeks before the retreat, and Jesse was not exactly excited about showing off his non-existent dancing skills in front of people he would probably have to see again. Moments before the skit, Angela tried to get him to practice with her, but he said that they could just “wing it.” Angela was less than pleased with Jesse's lack of commitment to the performance, and to say their first dance together was awkward is an understatement... The next night, Jesse sat down next to Angela while a group was hanging out, playing the guitar and singing songs. Around midnight everyone headed back to their cabins, but neither Jesse or Angela budged. The two of them continued to talk about their experiences growing up while moving every few years, living in Europe, the fact that they both have chin scars, and how he has the same birthday as Angela's grandmother. Without realizing it, a few hours had passed and they finally said their goodnights. One week and a few conversations later, Jesse asked her if she would like to meet him for coffee after her small group ended. Angela was torn about how to answer. She was extremely excited, but when she started to realize that she was about to have a date in attire that consisted of Nike shorts, a t-shirt, Chaco's, crazy hair, no make-up and glasses, it left her a little leery. She agreed to the date, and they were set to meet in just a couple of hours. Both of them had prayed that whatever this was and potentially becoming that the Lord would be glorified, and if it wasn't right that it would end quickly and painlessly. When they met that night, there was something that just fit. Angela enjoyed the fact the Jesse was genuinely interested in her stories and listened intently. Jesse was excited that he didn't have to do much of the talking. As the stories and laughter continued, each of them saw something in the other. Someone that they could trust, and someone with whom they could share the rest of their lives. About a week later, they went on their first “official” date to the Museum of Natural Science and then had “Dinner for 8” with their Bible Study class. As the night wound down, Jesse and Angela decided to head to Williams Tower and walk around the Water Wall. As they sat on a bench Jesse asked Angela if he could share his testimony with her, and then he began to tell her his story and how the Lord had changed his life. It was at that moment that Angela knew she would marry him and Jesse felt the same way as the night continued. The only way Angela can still describe it is that she felt the peace of the Lord in that moment. Philippians 4:7 says, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” And that’s exactly what was happening. They continued to walk around the Galleria for a few more hours, talking and sharing stories, both knowing that life had forever been changed and that the Lord was up to something good. |
